Queens Zoo and its collection

Queens Zoo, opened in 1968, is a zoo in Queens, United States.

The zoo sits within Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. As of 2013 it held up to 112 species, all of them from the Americas.

History

The park land had been the site of the 1939-40 World's Fair, and during the 1964-65 fair the spot held the Chrysler Pavilion and a Lowenbrau beer garden. Robert Moses pushed for a zoo in the park after the 1964 fair; it was announced that year as part of the botanical garden, although building started only on 20 August 1966. The accompanying children's zoo first bore the name Heckscher Children's Farm.

Animals and collection

The parks commissioner August Heckscher said that only North American species were possible, because the zoo ran all year with outdoor exhibits.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Waterfowl Marsh and Domestic Animals.
