Central Park Zoo and its collection

Central Park Zoo, opened in 1864, is a zoo in New York, United States.

The zoo is one of five facilities run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, four zoos and an aquarium, and the society runs children's teaching programmes and endangered-species restoration alongside it. Its forerunner menagerie dates to 1864 and was the city's first public zoo.

Animals and collection

Hattie, an Asian elephant, was purchased in 1920 by a member of staff, Bill Snyder, and lived only another two years. The gorilla Pattycake, born there in 1972, was the state's first gorilla to be born successfully in captivity, and keepers gave her a boy's name in the belief that she was male.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Central Garden and Tisch Children's Zoo.
