Bronx Zoo and its collection

Bronx Zoo, opened in 1899, is a zoo in New York City, United States.

The zoo covers 265 acres of parkland and habitats, divided by the Bronx River. As of 2010 it held over 4,000 animals of 650 species. Attendance averaged 2.1 million visitors a year as of 2009.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Sea Lion, Bee-Eater, Penguin, cheetahs and porcupines.

Exhibits

The earliest buildings, known as Astor Court, are Beaux-Arts pavilions arranged around a circular sea lion pool. A former trail called Rare Animal Range was devoted to highly endangered species. Premium exhibits cost $7 each when bought individually.

Conservation and approach

In 1905 the first director, William T. Hornaday, joined Theodore Roosevelt and others in setting up the American Bison Society. Bison numbers had fallen from tens of millions to a few hundred by the late 1800s.
