Shaldon Zoo and its collection

Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a zoo in Teignmouth, United Kingdom.

The trust occupies one acre of woodland above the village and belongs to both BIAZA and EAZA.

History

It began as a children's zoo in 1963 and became a wildlife trust in 1985, with a focus on small endangered species. Its founder, Stewart Muir, received an EAZA lifetime achievement award in 2024.

Animals and collection

Upwards of 50 species of mammal, bird and reptile are kept, the mammals centred on primates such as red titi monkeys and ring-tailed lemurs. Rarer holdings include pygmy slow loris, Owston's palm civet, lemur leaf frog, Bali myna and blue-eyed black lemur.

Things to do include Meet the Meerkats, Lemur Liaison and 360 VR Tour.

Conservation and approach

Much of the collection sits within managed breeding programmes, and conservation work covers five species, among them cotton-top and pied tamarins. The trust partners the charity Save Vietnam's Wildlife on civet breeding and protection, and is one of only three holders of that civet outside Asia.
