Dartmoor Zoological Park and its collection

Dartmoor Zoological Society, opened in 1968, is a zoo in Plymouth, United Kingdom.

More than 73 species are kept, some of them endangered or critically endangered.

History

The Daw family acquired the Goodamoor Estate in 1948, and Ellis Daw opened Dartmoor Wildlife Park on it in 1968; its 17th-century Goodamoor House was built by Paul Ourry Treby within the parish of Plymton St Mary. The loss of its licence closed the park in 2006. Benjamin Mee bought it that August and had it open again by July 2007, publishing We Bought a Zoo in 2008; a film loosely based on the book and sharing its title followed in 2011.

Animals and collection

Breeding species include the Asian short-clawed otter, the Amur leopard and the Carpathian lynx.
