Micke Grove Zoo and its collection

Micke Grove Zoo, opened in 1957, is a zoo in Lodi, United States.

The regional park around it also holds a Japanese garden, the county historical museum and an amusement park. An expansion begun in 2010 was to add Oriental small-clawed otters and a larger snow leopard habitat, but the building work stopped part-way and awaits further funding. Education work is paid for with help from the Micke Grove Zoological Society; six weeks of private zoo camp are run for county pupils, along with five weeks of public camp and Zoo Mobile outreach.

History

The Micke family gave a 258-acre oak park to San Joaquin County in 1938. The zoo opened in 1957 with Ronald Theodore Reuther as its first curator, and is dedicated to Micke's wife, who had died in 1952.

Animals and collection

The collection covers non-releasable raptors, tortoises and several lemur species, along with endangered Madagascan parrots. A snow leopard had joined by 2014.
