Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary, opened in 1963, is a zoo in Folsom, United States.
The zoo operates on sanctuary lines in how its animals arrive and are kept: they are never bred, sold or traded, though visitors are admitted.
History
It began in 1963, when the veterinary department at UC Davis asked the park superintendent to take in an orphaned bear cub. The bear was named Smokey and a cage was built for him.
Animals and collection
The stock includes bears, tigers, mountain lions, wolves and wolf hybrids, macaques, eagles and ravens, mostly North American natives.
What the venue says
- Stroll along peaceful, wooded pathways that wind through the sanctuary while reading the individual rescue stories of each animal.
- this miniature replica steam engine normally takes visitors on a scenic 4/5-mile track loop around the park
- Pick up souvenirs and mementos (typically open aligned with morning/early afternoon zoo hours).
- Visitors are welcome to pack their own food and utilize the picnic tables and shaded seating areas available in Lions Park.
- Free parking is available in the dedicated parking lot adjacent to the zoo sanctuary and library.
- Service animals trained to do work or perform tasks for individuals with disabilities (in accordance with the ADA) are warmly welcomed. Pets and emotional support animals are strictly prohibited.
- The pathways are generally flat and accessible, though visitors should anticipate typical outdoor park terrain.
