Henson Robinson Zoo and its collection
Henson Robinson Zoo is a zoo in Springfield, United States.
By 2018 the collection held over 300 specimens across more than 80 species. Admission is charged.
History
The zoo grew out of campaigning by a local contractor, Henson C. Robinson. In 1967 the city council reserved land and handed it to the Springfield Park District. Construction ran from 1968 to 1970 on the east shore of Lake Springfield, and the zoo, serving central Illinois, opened in 1970.
Conservation and approach
Its 501(c)(3) body, the Springfield Zoological Society, works on youth outreach through social media and school groups. The zoo also works regularly with School District #186, teaching conservation and biology through animal handling.
