Peoria Zoo and its collection
Peoria Zoo, opened in 1955, is a zoo in Peoria, United States.
The zoo is run by the Peoria Park District and opens every day of the year bar five holidays.
History
It began as Glen Oak Zoo in the closing years of the 19th century, after a donated elk herd went to the Peoria Park District; dedication came in 1897. An expansion push in 1955 drew counsel from Marlin Perkins of the St. Louis Zoo and Wild Kingdom.
Exhibits
The Africa section debuted in 2009 after more than ten years of planning and 30 months of building, and Australia Walkabout arrived in 2012 with a walk-through enclosure for two wallaby species, black swans, emus and a budgerigar aviary. Asian Trail is the smallest area, holding Siberian tigers, takins and muntjacs, while the Conservation Center keeps endangered reptiles and amphibians such as Panamanian golden frogs and Chinese alligators, and the Contact Barn has donkeys, Nigerian dwarf goats and koi. A rebuild of the Tropics Building, estimated at $5 million, is planned following comments from the AZA.
