Scovill Zoo

Scovill Zoo and its collection

Scovill Zoo, opened in 1967, is a zoo in Decatur, United States.

The zoo has its own chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers. Illinois weather forces special arrangements for some of the animals.

History

Guy Norman and Rose Scovill handed the land for Scovill Gardens to the Decatur Park District in 1947. It opened to visitors in 1967 under the name Scovill Farm, started with $14,000 put up by the Kiwanis Club. The early stock was pigs, chickens and goats.

Conservation and approach

The conservation approach rests on education and on giving funds to outside organisations.
