Zoo Duisburg and its collection

Duisburg Zoo, opened in 1934, is a zoo in Duisburg, Germany.

The zoo was founded in May 1934 by citizens of Duisburg. It held the first permanent koalas in Germany, and for a long time the only ones, having begun keeping them in 1994. Other rarities include giant otters, black colobus, Roloway monkeys, fossas, clouded leopards and wombats.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Beutelteufel, Koalas, Wombats, Delfine and Kattas.

Exhibits

The dolphinarium comprises a hall opened in 1995 alongside the older dolphinarium of the 1960s. The Äquatorium dates from 1962 and still holds species from Roloway monkey to gorilla, while the Rio Negro tropical hall, which depicts South American rainforest, opened in 2005. The aquarium, the oldest surviving building at the zoo, reopened in July 2015 after a three-year rebuild, and a new Siberian tiger enclosure opened in March 2016, followed in June by the twin cubs Makar and Arila.
