Solinger Vogel- und Tierpark and its collection
Solinger Vogel- und Tierpark is a zoo in Solingen, Germany.
The park lies north-west of the Ohligser Heide on Hermann-Löns-Weg and is constituted as a registered association. A nearby S-Bahn station takes its name from it.
History
Founded in 1927 in Ohligs, then still a separate municipality, it began as a pure bird park and later shifted to a mixed collection with many domestic animals. In the 1980s a shortage of association members nearly closed it; it survived, and most of the old enclosures and cages were replaced. Heavy debts brought an insolvency filing in May 2009, with a friends' circle keeping operations going.
Animals and collection
Birds still form the bulk of the stock, including parrot species rarely shown in zoos, exotic songbirds, common ravens, pied crows, owls and hooded vultures. Smaller carnivores kept include coatis, servals, foxes, raccoon dogs, wildcats and raccoons, alongside kangaroos and maras.
