Zoo Krefeld and its collection

Zoo Krefeld GmbH, opened in 1938, is a zoo in Krefeld, Germany.

The zoo covers 14 hectares and holds roughly 820 animals of about 120 species. About 350,000 people visited in 2017.

Animals and collection

Mostly municipally owned, it concentrates on great apes, big cats, African savanna species and tropical birds. A male two-toed sloth named Jan died in August 2024 at the age of 54, where wild two-toed sloths typically live around 20 years and captive ones roughly ten years longer.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include GorillaGarten, PinguinPool, PelikanLagune, AfrikaSavanne and ErdmännchenLodge.

Conservation and approach

It has been a member of WAZA since 1963, of EAZA since 1988 and of the German zoos' species-protection foundation since 2001.
