Dierenpark Emmen and its collection

Dierenpark Emmen, opened in 1935, is a zoo in Emmen.

Thirteen elephants were on site in 2011, others having been sent elsewhere. The elephants had a large moated island for cows and calves, a smaller one for the bull, and underground indoor quarters.

History

The zoo started in 1935 as the private collection of Willemm Osting in the town centre; by the 1960s the facilities had aged and attendance had fallen, and his daughter Alied took over in 1970 and began renovations. Financial trouble prompted a reorganisation in 2011. It shut at the end of 2015 and reopened in early 2016 on a new site as Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, while the old grounds reopened in June 2016 as a city park called Rensenpark.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Jungola, Nortica, Serenga and Yunka.

Conservation and approach

Twenty-six Asian elephant calves have been born since 1992, four of them in 2010-2011.
