Bird Kingdom and its collection

Bird Kingdom, opened in 2003, is a zoo in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Opened in May 2003 and billed as the largest indoor free-flight aviary in the world, it covers about 45,000 square feet with over 350 birds, mostly Australian, African and South American. Mammals, reptiles and amphibians are also kept and used in education work.

History

The Spirella Corset Company put up a four-storey concrete building on the site in 1908. By 1958 the shrunken company had moved to smaller premises, and Jacob Sherman, owner of the Niagara Falls Museum, bought the building that year. He rebuilt it heavily, adding a five-storey viewing tower and moving in 700,000 artefacts.
