African Lion Safari and its collection

African Lion Safari, opened in 1969, is a zoo in Flamborough, Ontario, Canada.

Seven game reserves cover roughly 740 acres and are toured by bus or private car.

History

It opened on 21 August 1969, founded by a retired colonel of the Canadian Army. Four farms totalling 250 hectares near Rockton were bought jointly with the English Chipperfield family, who were bought out in the early 1970s. Campaigners from a group called the Grassroots Ontario Animal Liberation Network picketed the season opening on 4 May 2013, objecting to exotic animals being used for entertainment and profit.

Exhibits

Enclosures across the seven reserves run from 2 to 20 hectares, and visitors stay in their vehicles. A boat ride passes lemurs, gibbons, siamangs, spider and squirrel monkeys, black swans and a pelican.

Conservation and approach

It takes part in Species Survival Plans for Asian elephant, cheetah, white rhino and cinereous vulture. Captive-bred animals released to the wild have included trumpeter swans, ferruginous hawks, a bald eagle, and barn and burrowing owls.
