Zoologischer Garten Berlin and its collection

Berlin Zoological Garden, opened in 1844, is a zoo in Berlin, Germany.

Around 20,000 animals of about 1,000 species are kept on 33 hectares. The grounds lie at Hardenbergplatz in the Tiergarten locality of the Mitte borough, on the boundary with Charlottenburg. With 3.6 million visitors recorded in 2024, it was the most-visited zoo in Europe.

Animals and collection

The flamingo Ingo, resident from 1955 and the zoo's oldest animal, died in February 2024 at an age of at least 75. The gorilla Fatou, born around 1957 and kept there since 1959, is the oldest lowland gorilla in human care.

Exhibits

The Steinbockfelsen, planned by Moritz Lehmann, dates from 1899 and houses a breeding group of Siberian ibex. The Adlerschlucht, for birds of prey, owls and ground hornbills, reopened in 2018 after a three-year rebuild.

Conservation and approach

The International Society for the Preservation of the Wisent was founded here in August 1923, and the zoo kept the wisent studbook, the first of its kind, which has been maintained in Białowieża National Park in Poland since 1991. It has also kept the International Studbook for the gaur since 1966.

Instead, visitors typically use paid public street parking nearby (such as around Hardenbergplatz) or nearby multi-storey public parking garages around Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten (like Kantstraße or the surrounding area). Public transit is heavily recommended.
• Begleitpersonen von schwerbehinderten Gästen mit H- oder B-Vermerk im Ausweis (jeweils 1 Person; Ausweis muss an Einlass vorgezeigt werden) müssen keinen Eintritt zahlen.
• Schwerbehinderte erhalten bei uns ab einem Behinderungsgrad von 50 GdB (gegen Vorlage eines Schwerbehindertenausweises) ermäßigten Eintritt.
