Alpenzoo Innsbruck — Zoo in Innsbruck

Alpenzoo Innsbruck and its collection

Alpenzoo Innsbruck, opened in 1962, is a zoo in Innsbruck, Austria.

The site covers about 10 hectares, of which only five are developed, and an expansion took place in 2022. Around 2,000 animals of some 150 species are kept, all of them from the Alpine region.

History

Hans Psenner founded the zoo on 22 September 1962, and its opening reconnected the Weiherburg with the sixteenth-century Renaissance deer park. It is known for reintroducing the bearded vulture, the ibex and the northern bald ibis to Tyrol, and it coordinates the European breeding programme for the bald ibis.

Exhibits

A walk-in aviary for northern bald ibis was built in 2002. Wisent and brown bear moved into new enclosures in 2003. There is also a show farm of old Tyrolean livestock breeds.
