Zoo Salzburg and its collection
Zoo Salzburg Gemeinnützige GmbH, opened in 1961, is a zoo in Salzburg, Austria.
Fourteen hectares lie within the Hellbrunn palace park, bordering Anif to the south. About 1,500 animals of 150 species are kept by a staff of roughly 50, and yearly attendance is around 400,000. The layout follows geographic-zoo lines and the zoo is treated as an educational institution, with mixed-species enclosures used to increase contact between species.
History
A deer-park field on the site is recorded in 1421 and was held by Petrus Erlacher in 1459. From 1612 Archbishop Markus Sittikus had Hellbrunn built, with a large hunting park attached.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include Alpensteinböcke, Wellensittiche, Wasserschildkröten and Ziegen.
Conservation and approach
Scientific projects have been carried out jointly with the science faculty of the University of Salzburg.
