Tierpark Hellabrunn and its collection

Tierpark Hellabrunn, opened in 1911, is a wildlife park in München, Germany.

The park claims to be the first zoo laid out on geographic principles, and holds about 18,500 animals across 529 species. It lies inside the landscape protection area of the Isar floodplain.

Exhibits

Chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas live in a jungle house built in 2001, and the aquarium, with seahorses and sharks, runs underground beneath the old ape building. The Australian section holds swamp and agile wallabies, red kangaroos, emus and black swans. The elephant house of 1914 is among the oldest surviving structures on site, while a tortoise house built in 1996 on the footprint of the old carnivore house keeps ten Aldabra tortoises.

Things to do

Things to do include Mühlendorf (mill village, for children's birthdays) and Keeper meeting points and training sessions.

Conservation and approach

The zoo takes part in 67 EEPs, five European studbook programmes and 21 international studbooks under WAZA. As of October 2024 it kept two EEP studbooks itself, siamang under Hanspeter Steinmetz and vicuña under Lena Bockreiß.
