Aachener Tierpark Euregiozoo — Zoo in Aachen-Mitte

Aachener Tierpark Euregiozoo and its collection

Aachener Tierpark Euregiozoo, opened in 1966, is a zoo in Aachen, Germany.

The stock runs to roughly 520 animals in about 70 species. The Beverbach flows through the grounds and is dammed into a pond of some two hectares in the north-western corner. In 2007 the zoo joined the Verband der Zoologischen Gärten, an association limited to scientifically run zoos with breeding programmes.

History

A predecessor zoo was laid out in 1885 in the Lochnergarten, on the site of today's Westpark. It held about 50 giant snakes alongside bears, tigers and local species. It shut temporarily in 1905 because feeding and transport costs had been underestimated.

Animals and collection

Species kept include the northern bald ibis, the only ibis originally native to the country, together with monkeys, camels, zebras, watusi cattle, lynx, servals, ostriches and sloths. Waterfowl have a lake of about two hectares as well as smaller ponds.
