Zoo Zürich and its collection

Zoo Zürich, opened in 1929, is a zoo in Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland.

The zoo opened in 1929 above the city on the Zürichberg, in the Fluntern district. It is the third-oldest zoological garden in Switzerland, after those at Basel and Goldau, and its official supporters' society has more than 40,000 members.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Bärenstummelaffe, Kleiner Panda, Löwe and Gorilla.

Exhibits

A bear enclosure of over 2,500 square metres for spectacled bears opened in 1995 and the rainforest hall followed in the summer of 2003. The petting zoo was built on a former farm and holds pigs, geese, chickens, goats and guinea pigs. A teaching space opened in the summer of 2005 to introduce city children to farm animals and urban wildlife.

Conservation and approach

Projects in Madagascar are supported with the long-term protection of the Masoala national park as the aim, and more than eight million francs had gone into work in and around that reserve by 2024. Kaeng Krachan park in Thailand, home to roughly 200 wild elephants, is also supported, together with the Wildlife Conservation Society.
