Walter Zoo and its collection

Walter Zoo, Gossau is a zoo in Gossau, Switzerland.

As of 2019 the zoo held about 1,110 animals in more than 120 species. The grounds of 5.5 hectares also carry play and rest areas for children, and a further 4.5 hectares next door are earmarked for build-out under a masterplan running to 2040. Attendance is roughly 250,000 visitors a year.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Rosakakadus, Pfirsichköpfchen, Schimpansen, Kleinen Panda and Zwergotter.

Exhibits

The reptile house was the site's first building, put up in 1973, and the chimpanzee enclosure, the largest in the country, dates from 1993. A savannah house opened in 2017, and lions returned in autumn 2018 with a new enclosure. A shared enclosure for red pandas and small-clawed otters opened in June 2022 as the first stage of the masterplan.
