Tiergarten Wels — Zoo in Wels

Tiergarten Wels and its collection

Tiergarten Wels is a zoo in Wels, Austria.

The oldest such park in Upper Austria, it holds 650 animals on 28,000 m², bounded by the trade fair grounds, the Almtalbahn line and Maria-Theresia-Straße.

History

Its origins trace to 1930, when a wild-animal show at the town festival prompted the council to create a lasting exhibition. The town bought the Herminenhof grounds and opened them to visitors as the Hirschenwiese. A bird enclosure dating from 1934 still stands.

Animals and collection

European pond, Hermann's, spurred and Egyptian tortoises are among the reptiles kept.
