Tiergarten Halberstadt — Zoo in Halberstadt

Tiergarten Halberstadt and its collection

Tiergarten Halberstadt is a zoo in Halberstadt, Germany.

Around ten hectares in the Spiegelsberge southwest of the town hold roughly 280 animals of 60 species.

History

The idea was conceived in 1960, when the town forester, Büschel, began with a red deer pen of 250 square metres; the first animal was a red stag called Hansi, brought over from the museum garden. Pheasants, ponies, roe deer and goats followed, and by 1961 there were 14 animals. The town council subsequently resolved to develop the site into a zoo for regional fauna.
