Parc animalier de Merlet, opened in 1968, is a zoo in Les Houches, France.

The collection specialises in Alpine wildlife. François, an ibex who had been mascot for twelve years and had a following on social media, died of old age in December 2023.

History

Merlet was a mountain hamlet lived in all year until the 1900s, when its residents left for the valley. The abandoned site then served only as summer pasture. Philippe Cachat, of Chamonix, set the park up there in 1967-1968, with a tame chamois named Bambi as its early mascot.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include bouquetins, mouflons, chamois, lamas and marmottes.

Things to do

Things to do include Glacier observation point, self-guided smartphone tour and exhibition and video screening room.
