Tiergarten der Stadt Nürnberg, opened in 1912, is a zoo in Nürnberg, Germany.

At the close of 2020 the collection stood at 6,824 individual animals across 310 species. The grounds and the adjoining Schmausenbuck land together form the Natura 2000 protected site DE6532372.

Animals and collection

Vertebrates accounted for 232 of the species and 2,708 of the individuals. Hoofed stock is extensive, including bison, wisent, eland, addax, Alpine ibex and Mishmi takin among many horned species.

Exhibits

The ape house of 1939, rebuilt several times since, holds lar gibbons, Barbary macaques and western lowland gorillas. The elephant house of the same year no longer holds elephants and is now used for Indian rhinos and Visayan warty pigs. The carnivore house is cut into sandstone rock and reached through a tunnel, and holds Amur tigers and Asiatic lions.

Conservation and approach

The zoo takes part in more than 30 European breeding programmes and coordinates those for the Malayan tapir, Caribbean manatee, Lahille's bottlenose dolphin, babirusa and harpy eagle. Reintroduction work has included Ural owls and Przewalski's horses.

What the venue says

• The zoo features several options ranging from sit-down dining to quick bites, including the traditional _Waldschänke_ restaurant with a beer garden, the _Grüne Oase_ bistro and kiosk next to the playground and petting zoo, and snack bars near the dolphin lagoon and main entrance.
• Parking spaces around the zoo area (such as near the main entrance and along nearby streets like Schmausenbuckstraße) are generally available.
• Während der bayerischen Sommerferien steht der Fahrdienst für Menschen mit Behinderung oder Hilfebedarf an drei Tagen pro Woche am Haupteingang des Tiergartens Nürnberg bereit. Die rollstuhlgerechten Fahrzeuge bringen die Fahrgäste von dort zum Eingang des Klimawaldpfades und zurück.
