Knuthenborg Park and Safari and its collection

Knuthenborg Safaripark, opened in 1860, is a safari park in Maribo, Denmark.

Over 500 animals of more than 40 species roam loose in zones matching their home ranges. About 300,000 people visited in 2023, making it one of Denmark's busiest attractions and the largest safari park in northern Europe. It is owned and directed by the present count, Christoffer Knuth.

History

The grounds were opened to paying visitors as early as 1860, and a deer park with 70 sika deer was laid out around the swan lake in the 1950s. Adam W. Knuth created the safari park proper in 1969, after obtaining zebras, three ostriches and nilgai through the dealer Gunnar Klausen. Four African elephants came via the dealer Franz van den Brink and were moved to Longleat in 1977.
