Griffith Park Zoo

Griffith Park Zoo and its collection

Griffith Park Zoo, opened in 1912, is a zoo in Los Angeles, United States.

Now closed, the ground retains ruined enclosures along with a picnic area and hiking trails.

History

It started in 1912 with a collection of fifteen animals, on ground that had been Griffith J. Griffith's disused ostrich farm; the city's earliest zoo, Eastlake, had opened in East Los Angeles in 1885. The film producer William Nicholas Selig, who had tried to make his lot an animal theme park, gave many studio animals in the mid-1920s. It shut in 1966 as the Los Angeles Zoo opened.

Animals and collection

Well-known residents included a camel called Topsy, an elephant called Gita, and Ivan the Terrible.
