Dvůr Králové Zoo and its collection
Dvůr Králové Zoo, opened in 1946, is a safari park in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Czech Republic.
The zoo is owned and run by a joint-stock company formed in 2005 and held by the Hradec Králové region. It has specialised in African animals since the late 1960s. Its safari section can be driven through by adapted tour buses or in visitors' own cars.
History
The impetus for animal displays came from the locally born Otakar Štěpánek, later briefly director of Prague Zoo, after the war and the nationalisation of the Neumann villa. Volunteers working under a later keeper, Josef Fabián, built the first cages and pens on 4.6 hectares of a former flower garden. Those first pens held undemanding central European animals such as foxes, badgers, owls, magpies and roe deer.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include žiraf, Surikaty, nosorožců, okapi and hrošíků.
Exhibits
Its exhibits include Pavilon žiraf, Madagaskar a tropický les, Velká ptačí voliéra, Vodní světy a Jedovatá Afrika and Tropické bažiny.
