Zoo Dresden and its collection

Dresden Zoo is a zoo in Dresden, Saxony, Germany.

The zoo houses 1,031 animals in 205 species, including 79 bird and 61 mammal species. It covers about 13 hectares in the south-western part of the Großer Garten.

History

A committee formed in 1859 on the initiative of the Dresden Verein für Hühnerzucht set the founding in motion with the city administration, and King Johann provided part of the royal Großer Garten. Peter Joseph Lenné was the landscape architect, while Carl Adolph Canzler was responsible for all the zoo's buildings. It opened in May 1861, making it the fourth-oldest zoo in Germany after those of Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Cologne.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Löffelhund, Sumatra-Orang-Utan, Glattotter, Koala and Aldabra-Riesenschildkröte.

Exhibits

The Aquarium/Terrarium building opened in 1961 and closed in 2022. The Zoo unter der Erde followed in 1997, and the Afrikahaus was inaugurated in 1999 at a cost of 12 million marks. An orangutan house opened in June 2024.
