Ústí nad Labem Zoo and its collection

Ústí nad Labem Zoo, opened in 1908, is a zoo in Ústí nad Labem, Ústí nad Labem Region, Czech Republic.

The grounds cover 26 hectares, where sea lion training, an elephant walk, raptor flying and pony rides run through the year.

History

Heinrich Lumpe, an ornithologist who dealt in metal goods, started the zoo in 1908. He acquired 6 hectares and established a private bird sanctuary, Lumpepark, adding a small castle along with cascading waterfalls and a lake with a fountain. The grounds now extend to 26 hectares, and a fare-paying tram known as the ZooTrain has linked the lower and upper entrances since 2007.

Animals and collection

Roughly 1,500 animals spanning 240 species are kept, a good many of them in European breeding schemes. Species on show include orangutan, Somali wild ass, rhinoceros and sun bear.

Exhibits

Children's attractions include animal models fitted with slides, a contact area and a prehistoric-animal trail. A paid tram called the ZooTrain, opened in 2007, runs between the lower and upper gates.
