Is Santa Barbara Zoo Worth It?

Yes, if you weigh it against what it costs: gate admission to the Santa Barbara Zoo runs $39.95 for adults, and that buys 381 animals across 101 species on a walkable 30 acres, including a rainforest exhibit built around a 12-foot Burmese python that opened in July 2025. Its size and recent additions carry the ticket for most visitors. If your trip also runs through the Santa Ynez Valley, OstrichLand USA in Solvang adds a very different, hands-on hour for far less planning.

What not to miss

The zoo's 30 acres opened in August 1963 on what was once the Child Estate, and today they hold 381 animals across 101 species, among them the Masai giraffe, Humboldt penguin, red panda, snow leopard, western lowland gorilla and California condor.

Featured location Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens Santa Barbara, United States AZAWAZAWAZA-WP It occupies the former Child Estate and holds more than 500 animals, capybara and California condors among them; one of its giraffes had a bent neck. A 2 ft narrow gauge train runs on the grounds.

The newest addition is Tropical Wonders, a rainforest-themed exhibit that opened on 25 July 2025 around vibrant birds, frogs and a 12-foot Burmese python. The zoo's Conservation Hub was also refreshed in 2026 around the southern sea otter and the snowy plover, with a new interactive water table built to switch between ecosystems.

The interactive water table is our biggest feature right now. We're going to be able to change it to different ecosystems as well.

If your trip also takes in the Santa Ynez Valley, OstrichLand USA is a different kind of animal encounter: a 33-acre ranch off State Route 246 between Buellton and Solvang where you hand-feed more than 150 ostriches and emus from a bowl (riding them is off-limits). A South African couple set the ranch up in the early 1990s, and Trudy Brown, the current owner, has run it since 2000.

Best time to visit

Hours shift with the season: 9:30am to 7pm, last entry 6pm, in spring and summer; 9:30am to 5pm, last entry 4pm, in fall and winter. The zoo also closes early, at 3:30pm, on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and a handful of special events.

One of those events is ZooLights, a separately ticketed evening lantern show that isn't part of day admission — about $24 for adults ($22 for members) and $22 for children ($20 for members), checked September 2026. If an evening lantern show isn't the point of your trip, plan around the daytime hours above instead.

Timing around whale season adds a reason to linger on the coast rather than just at the zoo. Winter brings Pacific gray whales migrating past the Santa Barbara Channel, and summer brings humpback and blue whales, with up to 28 species of whales and dolphins possible year-round; boats also reach Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary from Santa Barbara Landing, with naturalist volunteers aboard some trips. The same waters lead to Channel Islands National Park, home to the endemic island fox and to San Miguel Island's Point Bennett, where more than 100,000 seals and sea lions haul out.

Tickets and saving money

As of September 2026, Santa Barbara Zoo gate admission is $39.95 for ages 13 and up and $29.95 for ages 2-12, with children under 2 free; buying online saves $2 per ticket. Parking costs $11 per vehicle and is free for members.

A few ways to pay less: guests on SNAP/EBT pay $3 per admission for up to four people through the Museums for All program (bring an EBT card and photo ID to the admissions window). If you'll visit more than once, an Individual Plus membership costs $139, Dual Plus $199, and a Flock membership for two adults and four children $299 — each includes free admission and parking for a year, plus entry half an hour before the public opening.

Getting there

The zoo is at 500 Niños Drive in Santa Barbara. Without a car, the Downtown-Waterfront Shuttle stops right at the zoo on its run between State Street and the harbor: $0.50 one-way (or $0.25 for seniors and people with disabilities), $1 for an unlimited day pass, and free if you already hold a zoo ticket, a zoo membership, or an Amtrak ticket. On its summer schedule, 29 May to 7 September 2026, it runs Friday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, every 20 minutes.

OstrichLand USA is about 46 miles northwest in Solvang's Santa Ynez Valley, reached via US-101 to Buellton and then State Route 246. Its own parking is usually fine but can fill on busy days, and anything over 20 feet — tour buses and RVs included — needs to call ahead.

With kids and accessibility

At the zoo, free sensory backpacks — noise-cancelling headphones, fidget items, a scavenger hunt — are available at admissions for kids who need a calmer visit. Wheelchairs rent for $7 a day ($6 for members) at the gift store near the entrance, first-come first-served.

OstrichLand USA is wheelchair accessible and has ADA portable restrooms. It's a hands-on stop built around feeding the birds, and riding them isn't allowed.

Is Santa Barbara Zoo Lights worth it?

That depends on whether you want an evening lantern show rather than a daytime zoo visit — it's a separate ticket, not included in day admission, priced at about $24 for adults and $22 for children, $2 less for members, checked September 2026. Weighed against a regular daytime visit, the daytime ticket costs more but shows you far more of the zoo.
