San Diego Zoo or SeaWorld: Which One Should You Pick?
Pick the San Diego Zoo if you want giant pandas, koalas and a day where you can bring your own lunch; pick SeaWorld San Diego if your group wants orcas, sharks and roller coasters on one ticket. With young children the calendar may settle it: through November 1, 2026, SeaWorld gives a free ticket to a child aged 2-9 with each paid any-day adult ticket, and throughout October the zoo lets children 11 and under in free with an adult who has valid admission.
Which venue to choose
San Diego's two big animal parks make for very different days. The zoo is about variety: it covers 100 acres, houses over 12,000 animals of more than 680 species and subspecies, and keeps over 40 koalas, the largest number in any zoo outside Australia. Giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao have been on show there since August 8, 2024.
Featured location San Diego Zoo San Diego, United States AZAWAZAWAZA-WP The zoo occupies 100 acres leased from the city and was an early adopter of cageless, open-air habitat displays. Animals on show include Giant Pandas, Koala, Red Panda and Baboon.SeaWorld is a marine mammal park, oceanarium, aquarium and rescue center in Mission Bay Park, with rides mixed in. Admission covers all shows, exhibits, aquariums and rides except Skytower and Bayside Skyride, and the rides run from kid-friendly Tentacle Twirl and Tidepool Twist up to Emperor, California's tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster.
With toddlers and preschoolers
At the zoo, the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp covers more than three acres, with nature play areas where you can climb, scramble and jump. At SeaWorld, Octarock takes riders from 31 inches (79 cm), and Sea Dragon Drop takes riders from 36 inches (91 cm) or shorter children riding with a supervising companion, so a preschooler is not limited to watching.
With older kids and teens
At the zoo, the ride-like extras are the 35-minute narrated Guided Bus Tour and the Skyfari Aerial Tram, both included with a day ticket, subject to availability.
Adults and animal lovers
For variety, choose the zoo, with more than 680 species and subspecies. Choose SeaWorld if marine mammals are the point: its orcas have underwater viewing, its presentations include Sea Lion & Otter Spotlight, Orca Encounter and Dolphin Adventures, and three male belugas from the closed Marineland of Canada arrived on August 23, 2026.
A shorter third option
If neither big park suits, Birch Aquarium at Scripps is an aquarium-only alternative. It opens daily at 9 a.m., with closing times that change by season, and its Adam R. Scripps Living Seas Gallery opened on May 22, 2025. Tickets are about $29.95-34.95 online or $34.95-39.95 at the door (children 3-12 to adults), as of September 2026. Parking is free for three hours, but space is limited.
What not to miss
At the zoo, time the pandas. Panda Ridge opens daily at 10:30 a.m., and at busy times guests may be encouraged to keep moving along the path, with each visit lasting about 15 minutes. The zoo is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until October 1, 2026, which gives you an early window for everything else.
At SeaWorld, head below the surface. The orcas have underwater viewing, the all-new Shark Encounter shows sand tiger sharks, blacktip reef sharks and the endangered Australian leopard shark, and the Bayside Aquarium, opened in summer 2025, holds endangered and threatened species.
Tickets and saving money
As of September 2026, a zoo 1-Day Pass Any Day is $78 for adults (12 and over) and $68 for children aged 3-11, bus tour and Skyfari included. Buy online for one of the select Value Days and it drops to $73 and $63. If you also want the zoo's Safari Park, the 2-Visit Pass covers one visit to each and saves up to $26.
SeaWorld's single-day tickets for a chosen date start at $59.99. The adult ticket in the kids-go-free offer is $99.99, and it brings a free ticket for a child aged 2-9 through November 1, 2026. The Two-Day Ticket costs $99.99 in total for two visits within six months, and the Fun Card, listed at $94.99, gives unlimited visits through the end of 2027, apart from six blockout dates, most of them in July.
Want both parks? The San Diego CityPASS bundles SeaWorld (or LEGOLAND, or both) with three more attractions that can include the zoo, used over nine days, from $169 per adult. It lets you see both without cramming them into one day.
Budget for the extras, too. Zoo parking has cost $16 per car per day since January 5, 2026. SeaWorld's FAQ puts general parking from $25, its prices may vary by season, and general parking is free for SeaWorld Annual Pass members. Food rules differ too: the zoo lets you bring non-alcoholic drinks and a single-person food supply in small containers, while SeaWorld does not allow outside food or flavored drinks (water bottles are fine).
Getting there
The zoo is an 11-minute, 5-mile taxi or ride-share trip from San Diego International Airport. Rapid 215 and Route 7 buses stop at the zoo and connect downtown with Amtrak and COASTER trains at Santa Fe Depot and with the Blue, Orange and Green Line trolleys.
SeaWorld is about 15 minutes north-west of downtown and the airport. By transit, MTS buses 8 and 9 run daily from Old Town Transit Center, a trip of about four miles and fifteen minutes. An adult MTS fare is $2.50 one way, and a day pass is earned at $6.00.
With kids and accessibility
Children aged 2 and under get into both parks free. The two kids' deals overlap in October: the zoo is free all month for children 11 and under with an adult who has valid admission, and SeaWorld's kids-go-free ticket for ages 2-9 runs until November 1, 2026. If you can move your trip into October, the zoo gets cheaper for a young family.
The zoo has steep grades in parts, and its on-call ADA shuttle for guests with mobility-related disabilities takes standard wheelchairs and permitted ECVs. SeaWorld provides wheelchair access at all shows and attractions, rents wheelchairs and ECVs online ahead of time, and its Ride Accessibility Program puts enrolled guests in a virtual queue. All of Birch Aquarium is wheelchair accessible.
