Zoobotánico Jerez and its collection

Zoobotánico Jerez, opened in 1953, is a zoo in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

The site covers 70,000 m2 and holds one of the oldest botanical collections in Spain, including century-old trees. An expansion and renewal programme has been planned that would double its size.

History

The grounds date from 1889, when the city's water tanks were built and their surroundings landscaped; the spring water there supplied drinking water to the city and to several towns around the Bay of Cádiz. The area was known at the time as the Tempul gardens, and the park was laid out around the Tempul water tank site. It was turned into public gardens in 1939, when the botanical section began to take shape.

Animals on show include loros, murciélagos, Suricato and Lince Ibérico.
