Wrocław Zoo and its collection

Wrocław Zoo, opened in 1864, is a zoo in Wrocław, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland.

The oldest zoological garden on present-day Polish territory, at Wróblewskiego 1–5, it covers 33 hectares. By the end of 2015 it showed over 10,500 animals of 1,132 species, excluding invertebrates, the third largest total in the world on that measure.

History

It opened on 10 July 1865. It was shut from 1921 until 1 May 1927, the city and the state being impoverished after the First World War, and the grounds served as a park in the meantime. It closed again between April 1945 and 18 July 1948, owing to the siege and the killing of the animals.

Animals and collection

A Malayan tapir born here in 1897 was the first tapir birth in any zoo. The pygmy hippos Elpunia, brought from Kraków, and Carlos, from Paris, produced Psotka on 7 June 2009 and Luna on 8 October 2012.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Afrykarium, Pawilonu Małp Człekokształtnych and wybieg likaonów.
