Woodland Park Zoo
Woodland Park Zoo and its collection
Woodland Park Zoo is a zoo in Seattle, Washington, United States.
Around 900 animals of 250 species are kept, and the zoo receives over a million visitors yearly. It has taken more than 65 awards in various categories.
Animals and collection
Some 250 species are represented in a collection of roughly 900 animals. One former resident was the western lowland gorilla Bobo, kept from 1953 to 1968, whom the Lowman family of Anacortes had bought as a baby in 1951 from a hunter in Columbus, Ohio and reared in their home.
Exhibits
The zoo built what is widely credited as the first immersion habitat, made for gorillas and opened in the late 1970s under the architect David Hancocks. It stands second only to the Bronx Zoo in its count of AZA Best National Exhibit awards.
