Northwest Trek Wildlife Park — Zoo in Pierce County

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park and its collection

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, opened in 1975, is a zoo in Eatonville, United States.

A tram carries visitors through a 435-acre area where animals range freely, and this is the park's main draw; the separate Wild Drive route is taken by private car, passing mountain goats, bison, swans, caribou, deer and Roosevelt elk. Also kept here are cougars, wolverines, bobcats, bald eagles, grey wolves and bears of both the black and the grizzly kind.

History

The founders, David and Connie Hellyer, gave their holiday land to Metro Parks Tacoma in 1971 for a wildlife preserve, and the park opened to visitors in 1975, with bond measures funding later improvements. Owl exhibits were added in 1982, 1985 and 1988, and Cat Country in 1987. The Cheney Discovery Center for children followed in 1989, wolves in 1992, bears in 1993, a picnic pavilion in 1995, and coyote and red fox in 2003.
