Walter D. Stone Memorial Zoo
Walter D. Stone Memorial Zoo and its collection
Stone Zoo, opened in 1905, is a zoo in Stoneham, United States.
Zoo New England, the trading name of the Commonwealth Zoological Corporation, runs the site along with the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston. Smaller displays occupy the low ground, while the rocky wooded slopes above carry larger habitats given over to Species Survival Plan animals. These include a North American Wetlands area with tundra swans and whooping cranes, an Animal Discovery Center of reptiles and amphibians, and a Barnyard of goats, Southdown sheep and chickens.
History
It started in 1905 as the Middlesex Fells Zoo with local animals, adding exotics later. A Mother Goose-themed Kiddy Zoo opened in the 1950s. Big renovations followed in the 1960s under a director named Walter D.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include Snow Leopard, Jaguar, Black Bear, Mexican Gray Wolf and Arctic Fox.
Exhibits
A North American Wetlands area, dating from about 2012, holds tundra swans and whooping cranes. An Animal Discovery Center of about 2017 shows corn snakes, poison dart frogs, box turtles, leopard geckos and rosy boas. The Barnyard keeps Nigerian dwarf and Nubian goats, Southdown sheep and assorted chickens.
