Sedgwick County Zoo and its collection

Sedgwick County Zoo, opened in 1971, is a zoo in Wichita, Kansas, United States.

The collection numbers over 3,000 animals from close to 400 species, placing it seventh among American zoos by area and thirteenth by counts of species and animals. Opening came on 25 August 1971 through a partnership between the county and a zoological society, replacing an outdated display in Central Riverside Park that dated to around 1900. Exhibits range from the African Veldt of 1973 to Downing Gorilla Forest, Pride of the Plains and Cessna Penguin Cove.

History

It opened on 25 August 1971 through a partnership between the county and a zoological society, succeeding an outdated display in Central Riverside Park that dated to around 1900. The society had formed in 1963, and by 1966 voters had passed $3.65 million in bonds to buy the land.

Exhibits

African Veldt dates from 1973 and shows reticulated giraffes, Grévy's zebras, a black rhino, lemurs, marabou storks and blue cranes, while Pride of the Plains opened on 29 May 2000 with lions, red river hogs and two meerkat yards. Downing Gorilla Forest opened in 2004, beginning with a mock Congo village holding colobus monkeys and white pelicans, and Cessna Penguin Cove followed in 2007 as the first marine exhibit, with Humboldt penguins, Inca terns and grey gulls. A $3 million Asian-themed cat exhibit opened in 2009 as Slawson Family Tiger Trek, holding Amur and Malayan tigers, red pandas and brow-antlered deer.
