Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo and its collection

Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is a zoo in Gainesville, United States.

It occupies ten wooded acres on the western side of the college's main campus. Tours are led by students in the programme and must be booked in advance, though self-guided visits are also possible.

History

It dates from 1970 and is described as the only college-based zookeeper training facility in the country.

Animals and collection

Its holdings run to more than 200 animals drawn from over 70 species of mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian and insect. The AZA Species Survival Plans it contributes to cover the ocelot, the Perdido Key beach mouse, the Guam rail, the red ruffed lemur, the Asian small-clawed otter, Matschie's tree-kangaroo and the white-handed gibbon.

Things to do include Zookeeper for a Day, Animal Encounters, Story Time at the Zoo and Boo at the Zoo.

• At this time, we do not have concessions at the zoo. We do have a Pepsi beverage vending machine in front of the zoo near the restrooms.
• Parking is free! The Zoo shares the parking lot with the Little School and acts as overflow for the SF main campus.
• The 1/4 mile trail through the wooded environment is lined with mulch and is stroller and/or wheelchair accessible.
• Service animals are welcome at the Zoo.
• Handicap spaces are available next to the restrooms close to the entrance of the Zoo.
