Nordsøen Oceanarium and its collection

Nordsøen Oceanarium, opened in 1984, is an aquarium in Hirtshals, Denmark.

The species on display come from the waters around Denmark. The oceanarium belongs to the Nordsøcentre, which also contains a conference centre.

History

It opened in 1998. A fire wrecked the building in December 2003, and it reopened in July 2005.

Exhibits

The elliptical main tank in the older building measures 22 by 33 metres and holds 4.5 million litres, making it the largest in Northern Europe. Twelve habitat tanks of between 4,000 and 16,000 litres cover North Sea settings, from the sand beneath a jetty to the mud of the Norwegian Trench. An outdoor pool, the Sealarium, shows the two seal species of Danish waters, harbour and grey.
