Maria Mitchell Aquarium, opened in 1997, is a zoo in Nantucket, United States.
History
It occupies the old Nantucket Railroad ticket office at 28 Washington Street, on the shore of the harbour.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include American Lobster, jellyfish, shrimp, tropical fish and crabs.
Exhibits
A touch tank sits below the small gift shop, and staff give free personal tours. The collection is made up entirely of local species, caught in nearby waters and put back at the end of each summer.
Conservation and approach
It runs bay scallop research with the Nantucket Shellfish Association. It also contributes to an annual horseshoe crab survey and to work on marine fish and invertebrate biodiversity.
