Kolmårdens Djurpark — Zoo in Norrköping Municipality
Kolmårdens Djurpark and its collection
Kolmården Wildlife Park, opened in 1965, is a zoo in Kolmården, Norrköping Municipality, Östergötland, Östergötland County, Sweden.
The park sits on the northern shore of Bråviken, about 100 metres above sea level, and at 1.75 km² is the largest zoo in the Nordic countries. Some 80 species are kept, several of them endangered and held in Swedish and international breeding programmes.
History
The plan was drawn up in 1962 by a municipal consultant, Ulf Svensson, and a planning bureau in Borås under the architect Tage Hedlund was engaged for the design. Ground was broken on 31 August 1964, and the county governor, Per Eckerberg, opened the park on 27 May 1965, when it covered 1.25 km² and held 210 animals. Svensson went on to lead it as director for many years.
