Jackson Zoo and its collection

Jackson Zoo, opened in 1919, is a zoo in Jackson, United States.

The zoo sits within a 110-acre park and draws about 85,000 visitors a year, from the state and those neighbouring it, along with some 20,000 pupils across the school year. It has had trouble with both visitor numbers and money.

History

The city bought 79 acres from Samuel Livingston in 1916, land that then lay outside town. By 1919 firefighters were keeping a growing animal collection at the central fire station, now the Chamber of Commerce Building, and it had come to include exotics such as zebras. The animals were moved to the purchased land in 1921, creating Livingston Park Zoo.

The collection numbers roughly 250 animals drawn from upwards of 120 species.

Exhibits

The Asian Garden, near the entrance, has grottos for Sumatran tigers and Asian black bears, and a section devoted to Mississippi wildlife opened in spring 2006. The Elephant House Cafe, the Elephant/Rhino Barn and Monkey Castle carry historic landmark certification from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
