Frank Buck Zoo

Frank Buck Zoo and its collection

Frank Buck Zoo, opened in 1930, is a zoo in Gainesville, United States.

The zoo takes its name from Frank Buck, a screen actor and director born locally, and keeps more than 130 animals.

History

A. Morton Smith established the collection under a circus name, and it was first open to visitors during 1930 at the Cooke County Fair in Fair Park. Buck, who gathered animals internationally, served as ring master at the site. Fire destroyed the circus gear in 1954, after which the animals were kept in permanent enclosures, and Buck's name was adopted that same year.
