Civic Aquarium of Milan — Aquarium in Milan

Civic Aquarium of Milan and its collection

Civic Aquarium of Milan, opened in 1906, is an aquarium in Milano, Italy.

The third oldest aquarium on the continent, it was intended to portray Italian fresh and salt water environments in detail. It sits in Parco Sempione between the Arena Civica and the Sforza Castle, and is counted among the city's notable Liberty-style buildings.

History

It dates from the international exposition of 1906, held to mark the opening of the Simplon tunnel. The building was designed by Sebastiano Locati and paid for by the duke Giuseppe Crivelli Serbelloni, then head of the Lombard fishing and aquaculture society, and was inaugurated on 28 April 1906. The exterior has since undergone a three-year restoration.

What the venue says

  • While there are no major sit-down restaurants inside the aquarium itself, its central location on Viale Gadio places it right next to numerous cafes, kiosks in Parco Sempione, and surrounding Milanese eateries.
  • Street parking directly adjacent to the park is limited and restricted; visitors typically utilize nearby commercial parking garages in central Milan or travel via public transit (such as the Lanza or Cairoli metro stations).
  • The venue is structured to accommodate visitors with accessibility needs, and admission is free for people with disabilities and their personal caretakers.
