Australian Reptile Park
Australian Reptile Park and its collection
Australian Reptile Park is a zoo in Somersby, Australia.
The park displays close to 50 reptile species, among the largest such collections in the country.
History
The founder, Eric Worrell, began work in 1949 on an aquarium at Umina Beach, which admitted visitors in 1950 with marine fish, a young crocodile, and snake and lizard pits. Worrell went on to milk snake venom to supply antivenom production at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories.
Animals and collection
Reptiles on show include Komodo dragons, turtles, tortoises, tuataras, alligators and crocodiles. A crocodile named Eric, hatched in 1947 in the Northern Territory, was a long-running feature.
Exhibits
Ploddy the Dinosaur is a landmark visible from the motorway heading north past the Mooney Mooney Bridge. Public talks and feeds cover Galápagos tortoises, reptiles, the Tasmanian devil, koala, spiders, dingo and alligator.
