Audubon Zoo — Zoo in New Orleans
Audubon Zoo and its collection
Audubon Zoo, opened in 1914, is a zoo in New Orleans, United States.
Covering 58 acres with more than 2,000 animals, the zoo sits within Audubon Park on the river side of Magazine Street. It is run by the Audubon Nature Institute, whose other sites take in the aquarium, the Louisiana Nature Center, the Freeport-McMoran Species Survival Center, the park and a coastal wildlife network.
History
Animals have been displayed on the site since the World Cotton Centennial fair of 1884, although the present zoo dates from the early 1900s. A flight cage arrived in 1916, and a sea lion pool followed during expansion in the 1920s.
Exhibits
World of Primates keeps the only Angolan talapoins in North America, together with gorillas, mandrills and tamarins. Jaguar Jungle is themed as a ruined Mayan temple and holds jaguars and giant anteaters, while the walk-through aviary carries over 30 bird species from around the world. The Watoto Walk petting area, in front of the savanna, keeps sheep, goats, donkeys and miniature zebu.
