The Best Zoos in Canton of Basel-Stadt

How this list is ordered: by how complete our listing is — how much we hold on opening hours, ticket prices, accreditation, photographs, animals and facilities. It is a measure of our own coverage, not a judgement of the venue. We hold no visitor scores or conservation assessments, so “best” here means every zoo in Canton of Basel-Stadt that qualifies for the list, fullest entry first.

Listed alphabetically

  1. Zoologischer Garten Basel AG

    Zoo in Basel

The zoo lies in the Basel-Bachletten quarter on the river Birsig and covers around 11 hectares. In 2014 it held 7,017 animals in 628 species, among them 58 mammal, 88 bird, 41 reptile, 10 amphibian, 284 fish and 147 invertebrate species.

  2. Tierpark Lange Erlen

    Zoo in Basel

Founded in 1871 together with its carrier association, the Erlen-Verein, the park specialises in native animals and positions itself as a complement to the city's zoo. Roughly 450 trees stand on the site, ranging from weeping copper beech to giant sequoia. Entry is free during daylight hours.

Our ranking methodology

This is not a ranking. The 2 venues above are listed alphabetically by name, the same order used throughout this site. We do not collect visitor reviews, star ratings, ticket-sales figures or a conservation-impact score, so none of those exist here to rank by — “best” in this page’s title means every venue that qualifies for this list, not first-to-last by quality. If we ever add a data source robust enough to support an honest ranking, this note and the order above will change together.
